The Lake Nona High School Academy of Health Science is designed to prepare motivated students for a future in the expanding fields of health care. This program provides students with the education and hands-on training that can lead to certifications in many areas of health care. Students take AoHS electives during their freshman and sophomore years for introduction into these areas. They then have the opportunity to participate in a Career and Technical Education program during their junior and/or senior year for part of the school day at an OCPS Technical College. Or, they may continue with health science electives at LNHS which will lead to certification in one or two healthcare careers. To be accepted into the program, students must complete the core subjects as a prerequisite and earn at least a 77% in those courses.

Doctors and medical educators agree it is not too early to expose teens to careers in medicine, especially since there is going to be a great need in those professions in Central Florida in the coming years as Orlando continues to evolve into a destination for medicine and science.

“Health care is one of the major industries in our nation,” said Dr. Don Williams, former SVP at AdventHealth University. “Its health and survival has a profound impact on our economic well-being as a nation. Health care careers provide quick entry level positions, upward mobility within a career track and one of the most stable careers available today. It is critical that we get this word out to our high school students.”

The Bureau of Labor Statistics consistently ranks healthcare careers as the fastest - growing and most in-demand career areas in the United States.
